SYNOPSIS: The Immunology Program places a significant emphasis
on research training. However, the classroom experience is also an
integral component of the Ph.D. Program, providing the intellectual

OBJECTIVES: The Immunology Program trains students to become
independent biomedical research leaders in academia, industry or
government laboratories. Core courses in biochemistry, cell biology
and molecular biology complement the program's strong orientation
towards training independent investigators in immunology. Immunology
is researched within 5 areas of basic and translational research:
Mechanisms of Immunity and Inflammation (genetics, cell biology,
molecular biology and biochemistry in model systems); Immune-mediated
Disease (hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, inflammation); Vaccines and
Immune-based Therapies (cancer immunotherapy, allergy, infectious
disease, autoimmunity, tolerance); Regenerative Immunity (immune
reconstitution, transplant tolerance, immune-mediated regeneration);
Patient-oriented Research (patient studies, therapeutic trials).
ELIGIBILITY
Admission requirements for the Ph.D. Program include a bachelor's
degree from an accredited college or university, a strong background
in the basic sciences and prior research experience. The Graduate
Record Examination (GRE - School Code 6444 - Department Code 0299)
General Test also is required and scores should reflect strong
academic ability. Foreign applicants must submit their scores on the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL - School Code 6444 -
Department Code 30). All Ph.D. Program candidates must fulfill the
following requirements for eligibility: A baccalaureate degree,
preferably in the biological or physical sciences, must be obtained
from an accredited institution; An accumulative grade point average of
3.0 on a 4.0 scale is necessary; Certification of the degree is
required; The GRE General Test is required; Applicants must submit a
copy of their GRE test report; The subject test is not required; The
MCAT examination may be substituted for GRE.
FUNDING
Mayo Graduate School offers exceptional student benefits. Students
appointed to Ph.D. programs receive the following: Stipend of $26,750
per year (2010-2011); Full tuition scholarships ($17,900 per year);
Flexible vacation time; Paid travel to scientific meetings. Students
also have access to various benefits, some on a shared cost basis.
