What is the diff between checkin vs publish for enterprise wiki (SP2010)
if there are no approvals or other content mgmt on the site?
If none, therefore, publish does not have to be performed?

Depending on how your site is set up, that is do you allow anyone to make wiki changes.
From what I understand
Check-in/Check-out is for versioning and locks the document for editing.
Users can make changes and check the document in but it has to be published (approved) before it is available for general views.
