Alternate Access Mappings
Posted by: "brother.gabriel" brgabriel@sspx.org brother.gabriel

Salvete! We have a hosted site, and I want to rebuild the portal in 2010 instead of 2007 and host it on our own server. I've installes sharepoint server, configured it and created the site collection. So it is all ready. I have asked my current provider to make a pointer in our zone for mysubdomain.mydomain. org.
When the new portal is ready, I'll have the entire zone pointed to our server.
We have an Active Directory domain set up on our LAN: ADdomain.local
Now here is where I need help. I created our portal on our server as ssl with certificate at https://myportal.mydomain. This works if you browse it directly on that server, but of course, you can't get to it from the LAN or anywhere else.org.
So I added alternate access mappings:
default: https://portal.mydomain. org
for the LAN: http://portal.ADdomain. local
for the internet: http://mysubdomain.mydomain. org
My problem is that I cannot get to the site from anywhere but the local computer on account that portal.mydomain.org is set in the hosts file. How do I get it working on the LAN and the Internet?

You need to add a DNS entry to your DNS server or have your ISP do it if you
are using an external DNS. The entry should be resolve
myportal.mydomain.org to whatever the IP address of the SharePoint server
is. If you want to be able to hit it from the Internet then you either need
to have your firewall setup to map that address to an external IP or give it
an external IP directly.

You can use AAMs to redirect from one base URL to a different one, but that doesn't change the requirement for the URL to be resolvable via DNS.

AAM is not a redirect, it's a translator. SharePoint will return the default zone addressing scheme unless it knows how to translate the address you are using to one it knows. The client still needs to be able to find your site, hence the DNS. The server needs to be able to listen for each address, hence the host header bindings in IIS, and finally, SharePoint needs to know which address to return to you, hence the AAM.

Okay, I have made some progress.
I have this in my AAM:
http://portal -default -http://portal
http://portal.myADdomain. -intranet- http://myADdomain.local local
http://mysubdomain.myDomain. -internet- http://mysubdomain.org myDomain. org
https://portal.myDomain. -custom- https://portal.org myDomain. org
So, from the LAN, I can only access:
http://portal
http://portal.myADdomain. local
from the Internet, I can access:
http://mysubdomain.myDomain. org
However, I can't access https://portal.myDomain. from anywhere. I already have a hosted site at http://portal.org mydomain. and have not asked them to forward a DNS entry for that subdomain.org,
Here is my issue: When I created the web application, I designated it as https://portal.myDomain. and created a self-signed certificate for that subsite.org
When we have finished building the new portal, we will no longer use the hosted site, and so I will want the https://portal.myDomain. to use the certificate.org
But right now I only have a subdomain: http://mysubdomain.myDomain. and I want all internet traffic to go to the site I created at https://portal.org myDomain. org
I don't see how to do this in AAM. In IIS, the certificate is not for mysubdomain.
In short, I don't want to change the certificate, and I want to use the https://portal.myDomain. on my server and still have http://portal.org myDomain. work on the hosted server.org

A single FQDN (fully qualified domain name) like portal.myDomain.org can only map to one IP address via DNS. This is a networking requirement (for the traffic to get to SharePoint) and not something you can do with an AAM (which really just tells SP what to do with traffic once it gets there). If you want to run the parallel configuration you describe (even temporarily) you'll need to do something at the networking level – your options are:
1) A local "hosts" file on each client – you can use this to switch between IP addresses for the FQDN on a per-client basis for testing
2) A network device of some sort like a firewall/proxy or a load balancer.

I don't see how to do this in AAM. In IIS, the certificate is not for mysubdomain.
In short, I don't want to change the certificate, and I want to use the https://portal.myDomain. on my server and still have http://portal.org myDomain. work on the hosted server.org

The client still needs to be able to find your site, hence the DNS. The server needs to be able to listen for each address, hence the host header bindings in IIS, and finally, SharePoint needs to know which address to return to you, hence the AAM.
