PhD Research Studentships

Smart Grid Cyber Security Study by Cloud-enabled Simulation
Glasgow Caledonian University -School of Engineering and Built Environment

http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AGZ155/phd-research-studentships/

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD research studentship within
the School of Engineering and Built Environment at Glasgow Caledonian
University. The studentship is for a period of three years, subject to
satisfactory progress and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU
rate plus an annual stipend of £14,600 [please note that students from
outside the EU are required to pay the difference between International and
EU fees, currently this would amount to £7,100 per annum]. The successful
candidate is expected to undertake up to 6 hours of academic support
activity per week.

Project Description

The purpose of the smart grid is to fundamentally enhance the reliability,
efficiency and flexibility throughout the electric power process, including
generation, transmission, distribution, metering and systems management. To
achieve this, networked and automation systems must be deployed at all
levels, including devices, communication networks, SCADA (Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition), and grid middleware.

Being smart means every component at every level of the electric grid is
Internet connected. On the one hand, smartness makes pervasive and agile
monitoring, control and management of the grid possible. On the other hand,
the more smart the electric grid is, the more exposed the infrastructure
will be to the malicious attacks, intrusions and abuses, and thus the more
vulnerable the grid becomes than conventional electric grid.

Project Aims

To develop novel cyber-physical security tools and techniques for securing
the future smart grid networks. Specifically:

(i) To develop a simulation platform of smart grid that comprises
communication network, SCADA, etc. that is capable of activating network
security mechanisms. This simulation platform will integrate various
simulators such as network & dynamics simulator (e.g., ns2,
MATLAB/Simulink), SCADA & security simulator, smart grid simulator (e.g.,
GridLAB-D, GridSpice), agent-based electricity marketplace simulator, etc.
into a virtualised Cloud Computing environment;

(ii) To investigate network security mechanisms and protocols for SCADA and
smart grid, such as firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention,
techniques for detecting hacking, malware infection and malware
communications;

(iii) To implement cyber security test scenarios on the smart grid
simulation platform and to evaluate the effectiveness of the network
security mechanisms in smart grid and their impact upon the performance of
smart grid.

Candidate

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a good honours degree
(minimum 2.1) or Masters in Computing, Engineering or cognate discipline
with relevant research, academic and/or industry experiences in one or more
of the following areas: Smart Grid, Cyber Security, Cloud Computing,
Industrial Control Systems, etc.

The project will be supervised by a team from Glasgow Caledonian
University, University of Strathclyde and Queen's University Belfast.

Further information: Dr Bernardi Pranggono (b.pranggono@gcu.ac.uk)

How to Apply

Application forms are available on request from
researchapplications@gcu.ac.uk via the Apply button below.

Please state the Project Title on the completed application form and return
to this email address.

The closing date for applications is 16th August 2013

University of Oulu, Finland

Open Call for 107 doctoral student positions at the University of Oulu
Doctoral training environment

The University of Oulu, located at the heart of the globally recognized Oulu region R&D hub in Northern Finland, promotes advanced research especially in the focus areas of Biosciences and Health, Environment, Natural Resources and Materials, Information Technology, and Cultural Identity and Interaction. The University, with its 6 faculties and more than 70 specialist disciplines, cooperates closely with industry and commerce, and has broad connections with many international research and education institutions.

The University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) provides the framework and conditions for high-quality, research-driven doctoral education at the University of Oulu. UniOGS promotes the development of structured Doctoral Programmes covering the areas of Technology, Natural Sciences, Biosciences, Health Sciences, and Human Sciences, and nurtures effective student-supervisor relationships founded on both motivation and commitment. UniOGS thus aims to create a favourable environment for the planning, execution and timely completion of doctoral education tailored to each student.

The Doctoral Programmes of UniOGS provide systematic and comprehensive doctoral training allowing the completion of the doctoral degree within a period equivalent to four years of full-time study; the time may be adjusted to take into account other possible employment or training obligations of the doctoral student. The doctoral training offered within the doctoral programmes promotes and strengthens high-quality research in the University of Oulu strategic focus and development areas, and assures that students acquire good working-life skills that address the needs of both the work-place and society.

General description of the positions and the minimum requirements for selection.
The University of Oulu Graduate School now invites applications for 101 doctoral student positions for 2014 – 2017, funded by the University of Oulu and distributed between 8 Doctoral Programmes. Six additional "open research project" positions will be allocated to applicants whose research relates to any focus area of the University of Oulu.

The positions are available from the 1st of January, 2014, for highly motivated and talented students wishing to undertake and complete training for a research-focused doctoral degree. The durations of the funded positions are for two years, ending on 31st December 2015, or for four years, ending on 31st December 2017. Depending on the Doctoral Programme, the funded period may include a trial period of up to four months. Applicants may apply for multiple positions open in this call, but successful candidates may occupy only one doctoral student position.

The salary of the selected doctoral students will be set on levels 1–4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3% of whatever salary scale (1 – 4) is set for the post. The total salary for these levels (before tax) currently ranges from about 1770 to 3560 Euros/month for full-time employment.
All applicants must hold a Master's degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) in a relevant field by the end of 2013, and be able to demonstrate sufficient language skills in English or Finnish. The degree will have been accredited with good grades (at least 60% of the maximum grade in both taught studies and the Master's thesis. Lower grades and Bachelor level degree holders will not be considered). Note that these are the minimum requirements for selection; individual Doctoral Programmes may impose additional or more stringent requirements.

All applicants must include the following documents in their application:

1.A completed "Application for doctoral student positions" form;
Important: All applicants should read "Technical issues" for instructions on how to save the application form, and if you have problems opening the form;
2.Scanned electronic copies of all documents requested in the Application for doctoral student positions form, including: two signed reference letters, diplomas and transcripts of the records of previous degrees, and certificates of language proficiency tests if required;
3.Electronic copies of all additional documents requested by the Doctoral Programme to which you are applying. Details for these are provided in the individual call texts of the Doctoral Programmes.
All application documents are to be submitted electronically as attachments to a single e-mail addressed to the University of Oulu Registrar's Office (university.of.oulu@oulu.fi, or kirjaamo@oulu.fi) before 16th September, 2013, 15.00 (GMT+2hrs). Applications received after the deadline, or incomplete applications, will not be considered.
