PhD Studentship *University of Hull* -School of Biological, Biomedical and
Environmental Sciences

*Biomimetic model to study the development of optimal cancer immune
therapies*

To celebrate the University's research successes we are offering a PhD
scholarship and exciting research-training opportunity for a
highly-motivated, bright and enthusiastic graduate in the following project.

*Closing Date: 15 March 2013 *
*Proposed Start date*: 30 September 2013

*Informal enquiries:
*Dr E Rosca, e.rosca@hull.ac.uk
Dr J Greenman, j.greenman@hull.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0)1482 465409

*How to apply
*Visit our website at the *Apply* button below.
<http://www2.hull.ac.uk/science/biology.aspx>

*Project outline
*The objective of this project is to develop a biologically validated model
which can be used to investigate and optimize cancer immune therapies. The
immune system has a very specific and efficacious mechanism to distinguish
between self and non-self cells, thus it possesses the ability to eradicate
tumour cells. However, this is an intricate process which involves multiple
players (i.e., different immune cells, cytokines and cellular receptors)
and can be rendered inefficient by imbalances amongst them. Understanding
the dynamics of the parameters responsible for keeping this complex system
working efficiently will allow us to develop effective therapeutic schemes.

The first aim of this project will be to develop a mathematical model to
study the interaction between the immune system and the tumour
micro-environment. This will be accomplished by using transport phenomena
principles to generate differential equations to model the system as a
continuously stirred reactor. This will be achieved using the Matlab
software platform. Using this set up we will systematically examine the
parameter space and find the optimal levels of each component to yield an
ideal therapeutic effect.

Secondly, this project will biologically validate the model through *in
vitro* experimentation using a microfluidics system. Some parameters of the
model will be actual cells (such as T cells) while others will be
biomimetic models (i.e., liposomes modelling tumour cells). The
mathematical predictions will give a starting point for the biological
simulations. The final outcome of the project will yield an experimentally
validated computational model which can be used to describe the essential
parameters to be considered when developing immunotherapies.

Applicants should be highly motivated and have:

- A minimum Upper Second Class honours degree in biomedical sciences
from a recognised institution
- Familiarity with Matlab and cell culture techniques would be an
advantage

*Further details
*For UK/EU PhD students the scholarship will include fees at the 'home/EU'
student rate and maintenance of *£13,726* (in 2013/14) for three years,
depending on satisfactory progress.

For non UK/EU students the scholarship will cover the full overseas student
tuition fee for full-time study for three years, depending on satisfactory
progress, but no living expenses.

PhD students at the University of Hull are required to follow modules for
research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level
Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their
research degree.

Funded PhD Studentship – Tobacco Control *University of York* -Department
of Health Sciences

South Asian Consortium for Tobacco control Research

*Overview*

Applications are invited for a full-time three-year PhD studentship in
tobacco control research in people of south Asian origin, funded by NHS
Leeds and hosted within the Department of Health Sciences at the University
of York, commencing October 2013.

We are seeking an exceptional and self-motivated individual who wishes to
develop their research skills and build a career in tobacco control and who
will make an active contribution to the SACTR portfolio.

Approximately 350 million people consume at least one or the other forms of
tobacco in south Asia and nearly 1.2 million people die secondary to
related diseases. Tobacco use is also more common among people of south
Asian origin (mainly from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan) living in the UK
and US than in general population. In addition to smoking cigarettes,
people in south Asia also use a variety of smoking (bidi, Hookah) and
smokeless forms of tobacco. Use of such niche tobacco products is less
understood in terms of their toxicity, addictive properties, and
sociocultural determinants. Moreover, south Asian populations have
different underlying risks for diseases caused by tobacco use in both
relative and absolute terms. The same sociocultural determinants and
behaviours that influences tobacco use in south Asians are also likely to
influence the effect of interventions (primarily designed for cigarettes)
to prevent and control its use.

The PhD studentship is aimed to develop academic scholarship in the area of
tobacco control in south Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and
Nepal) and/or in people of south Asian origin living in the UK. The
successful student will be encouraged to present their own research.
However, it should enhance our knowledge in achieving sustained behaviour
change in relation to tobacco use in south Asians. The successful candidate
will be expected to build a research project within this area with the
support of their supervisors.

*The Award*

The award will cover academic fees at the UK/EU or overseas rate, depending
on the student status, and a maintenance grant of £12,000 per annum for
three years. A project support grant of £4,000 over the course of the PhD
can be used at the discretion of the supervisors to support research
expenses.

For students whose first language is not English there is a minimum
requirement of an IELTS score of at least 7 in each component of the test.

*How to apply*

Applications should be received no later than 30 April 2013 before 4:00PM.

Applications should be made using the Department of Health Sciences on-line
application process.<http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/uao/ugrad/courses/cupid/index.cfm?ippCode=DRPHSCSHSC3&level=postgraduate.>

Applicants should state that they are applying for the advertised Tobacco
control PhD studentship ref: PHD2013SID and provide a *curriculum
vitae*and two academic references. You should also upload an outline
of your
intended approach to the area of research outlined, stating your objectives
and potential methods or approaches that could be used (up to 500 words in
PDF format).

*Informal Enquiries*

Prospective applicants who wish to discuss the studentships should contact
Dr Kamran Siddiqi on kamran.siddiqi@york.ac.uk.

PhD student in Remote Sensing of Ecosystem Functioning
The Townsend lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the department of Forest & Wildlife Ecology seeks a motivated Ph.D. student interested in the linkage of remote sensing with plant physiology. The work will involve use of imaging spectroscopy data (such as AVIRIS), thermal infrared imagery (such as MASTER) as well as data from multispectral sensors (Landsat, MODIS, VIIRS), in addition to field measurements. The position is associated with multi-investigator projects examining the capacity of remote sensing to measure the photosynthetic capacity of both natural and agricultural ecosystems, and how these properties vary with environmental drivers. Ultimately, we plan to use our findings to develop methods to incorporate data from forthcoming remote sensing instruments to improve modeling of ecosystem response to environmental change. For this position, we are in search of a student with a strong background in plant biology or ecology who is also interested in using remote sensing technologies to quantify physiological aspects of plant growth, especially as they relate to variations in climate. The research will involve the linkage of field measurements of photosynthesis and physiological status to remote sensing and ecosystem models, in addition to development of methods to map landscape pattern from remote sensing data. The student will matriculate in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin â€" Madison. Questions about the position should be directed to Professor Phil Townsend, ptownsend@wisc.edu.
