Our webmaster is frustrated with the SP 2010 OOB deployment process for moving our publishing site content changes from a Dev box to a Stage box and finally to the production box. In other words, he is not pleased with how long it takes for a change made on page X on the development instance of our public site to actually being able to see it in production.

He feels that the overall process (even using Quick deploy) is actually cumbersome and unnecessary in our particular environment. He would like to be able to manage content changes directly in the production system.

It seems to me from what I have seen and read regarding working directly on a production system is risky.

Can anyone help me communicate the risks for Sr. management and / or if I am wrong and it is no big deal to do this kind of work directly on a production box, please let me know that too. Maybe I need to back off? Thanks for any counsel you can give and / or experiences you may have had with a similar situation!

So what does he want to do? Go from dev to prodction?
Or does he want to go straight to production?
Does the webmaster have any SP training?

Having worked SharePoint for 12 years I can honestly say there are as many ways to do it as there are individuals in charge of a given environment. The answer though, regardless of the number of individuals, the size of the deployment or the number of users is that to deploy changes in any enterprise requires a 3 step process - Developers develop and their work is deployed to a testing/staging system. The users and others test and and ensure the quality of the pages or products and finally the product or page is deployed to production. There really are no ands or ifs in a perfect world. If they wish to change 'best practices' as understood the world over then I recommend that the "webmaster" fully comprehend Sharepoint and that they realize that content deployment could have an adverse effect on the system as well as that fact that many products deployed could cause system resets that might interupt a user and also cause issues within the environement. So before advising or not recommending what is considered best practice, thoroughly research any possible issues and then make a choice as a group (such changes should involve a team of enterprise members to ensure that such changes are being done and making all aware of possible impact on systems and their behavior).

The one thing I would add to this is that in SharePoint you really need to separate publishing content from development. If all your webmaster is talking about is pushing content in Publishing then I do have several clients that do Publishing directly in production rather than using a staging server/farm. The one thing all these groups have in common is that the authorship and approval of content is always done by a very small group of people. The larger the group the more important it becomes to have a staging farm and a more formal change process. When discussing just the deployment of content by a small group of people then you can provide a reasonable change control process with just one production farm. More people or deploying artifacts like web parts, lists, even recievers, etc. requires a formal process and a test environment at a minimum.

Without knowing specifics, it sounds like you want to use Calendar Overlay.  Here's a link you can try:

I need to create a master calendar to include the schedules for the Directors that I support. They want everything on one calendar.
