1.: Content Type Craziness

I have a library with the default 'document' content type and an additonal custom content type. The intent is for new documents to default to this custom content type. I have set the custom content type as default and have hidden the 'document' content type from view. No matter what, though, the dropdown shows the 'document' content type and uses that as the first selection. Any suggestions on how I can get around this?
