Project description
A PhD position is announced in experimental particle physics with specialization astroparticle physics. Focus of this project is on analysis and interpretation of data from the gamma-ray satellite Fermi.

The Fermi satellite has been launched in 2008 and opened an new window on the universte to study some of the most intriguing questions of modern physics: how are the largest explosions in the Universe produced, how do the largest cosmic particle accelerators work and – last but not least – what is the mysterious dark matter. Fermi will during 2014 achieve its ultimate sensitivity, which implies the possibility of new exciting discoveries.

Dark matter was discovered already in the 1930s by the Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky. Today it is established beyond any doubt that dark matter is a new type of particle, whose nature is unknown. What we now is that its mass density is about 5 times higher. Our group focuses on analyzing Fermi-data to find traces of dark matter that can give rise to gamma rays when dark matter annihilates or decays. No traces have been found so far, but our improved analysis methods have helped excluding many popular candidates, see for example: www.su.se/english/about/2.291/press-releases/one-step-closer-to-dark-matter-in-universe-1.36693.

Fermi is a large international collaboration and we collaborate closely with for example the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University.

The Department of Physics is an internationally lively research environment, situated in the AlbaNova University Center, and has about 180 employees, 250 undergraduate students and 80 PhD students. For more information about the department, see www.fysik.su.se.

Education at the research level
A PhD education at Stockholm University is four years (48 months). The 4-year PhD program includes at least 3 years of research and at most one year of course work. The position may be extended by up to 1 year if up to 20 % teaching assistance or administration is included in the contract. During the beginning of the PhD education, the student receives a study grant ("utbildningsbidrag"), and after at most one year she/he acquires a PhD studentship ("doktorandanställning"). From July 1st 2015 employment will be the only option.

Requirements
To be accepted as a PhD student in Physics one should have studied at least four years at a University and have a BSc in Physics. These studies must include advanced courses in Physics during one year and an advanced degree project (a detailed description of a project in progress may suffice).

Selection
The successful applicant will be selected based on documented theoretical and experimental knowledge relevant for the area of study, knowledge of scientific theory and method, analytical skills, personal motivation and team working skills. Well-developed English language skills are required. The applicants are encouraged to provide supporting documents that substantiate qualifications, e.g., knowledge, skills, abilities and experience. References and interviews will be used to assess qualifications of the applicants. We seek a self-motivated candidate with good analytical abilities and skills in English.

For our next PhD Program starting in
October 2014 we are looking for exceptionally motivated PhD candidates with a
keen interest in genomics and medicine and a strong interest to work in teams.
The 2014 CeMM PhD Program will focus
on two thematic areas: INFECTION and CANCER, that are built on the pillars of
epigenetics, bioinformatics and systems biology, chemical biology and the
mechanism of action of drugs, high-throughput genetics, genomics and
proteomics, and molecular and cell biology.
The choice of this strategic focus
rests on the synergies between immunology, infection and cancer in
pathophysiological and technological terms. It furthermore reflects the
strength of the current CeMM faculty, itself built around the historical and
contemporary expertise in immunology and cancer of the Medical University of
Vienna.
As a CeMM PhD student you will get
the chance to work at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary molecular medicine
research and be trained by the entire CeMM and associated faculty to become one
of the scientists shaping the future of molecular medicine. 

Requirements
To be eligible to enroll in the CeMM
PhD Program all candidates are required to have a bachelor's or master's degree
in medicine, biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, mathematics or any
scientific/technical, subject-relevant degree. Candidates do not need to have
completed their degree at the time of application, however they must have
obtained their final degree certificate by mid-September. The working language
at CeMM is English, so excellent written and oral communication skills in
English are required.

 Timeline
* Applications open on 20th January and close on 20th March 2014.
* Two references are required to be submitted through the online system by 31st March 2014.
* All complete candidate applications are reviewed by the CeMM Faculty in early April.
* Selected candidates are invited to a Skype panel interview in late April.
* Shortlisted candidates are then invited to Vienna in May for a full interview process, including an opportunity to introduce yourself through a presentation and interview rounds, meet research group members, and attend an informal dinner to get to know the Faculty members and learn more about their research.
