Hari Baru, Teman-teman.
 
Salah satu tanda jika kita sudah menjalankan tugas kepemimpinan dengan baik adalah; kita merasa puas dengan pencapaian team kerja kita. Jika segala sesuatunya berjalan dengan baik, tidak ada konflik, tak tampak gejolak, maka boleh dibilang; kita berhasil sebagai pemimpin. Namun, apakah kelompok kerja yang kita pimpin benar-benar baik-baik saja seperti yang kita kira? Mungkin ya. Sangat mungkin juga tidak. Mengapa? Karena tidak semua hal berjalan seperti kelihatannya.
 
Dulu sekali. Ketika masih bekerja sebagai profesional. Saya mengira segala sesuatunya berjalan baik-baik saja. Semua pekerjaan diselesaikan dengan baik. Target penjualan terlampaui. Urusan administratif tuntas. Dan, kelihatannya semua anggota di team kerja itu telah melakukan setiap penugasan dengan memuaskan. Sama sekali tidak ada yang perlu dikhawatirkan.
 
Suatu saat, atasan saya memanggil ke ruang kerjanya. Ah, itu soal biasa. Kalau tidak berdiskusi soal 'what next' atau 'what if', maka mungkin ada tugas tambahan yang akan saya dapatkan. Namun kali ini dugaan saya keliru. Ternyata beliau menyampaikan sebuah berita yang jauh lebih penting dari itu. Dan yang jelas, diluar dugaan. Tahukah Anda apakah gerangan berita itu?
 
"Dadang," begitu beliau memulai percakapan. "Ada 3 anak buahmu yang datang menghadap saya." Katanya.
 
"Oh, ya?" begitu kira-kira respon saya waktu itu.
Bagi kami, hal itu sebenarnya tidak terlalu istimewa karena kami sudah sepakat untuk membuka jalur komunikasi secara leluasa tanpa terhalangi sekat-sekat struktural.
 
"Ada hal penting apa yang perlu saya ketahui?" begitu saya bertanya.
"Begini..." lanjut beliau. Jelas sekali jika ada sesuatu yang luar biasa. "Mereka mengeluhkan tentang cara kamu berbicara kepada mereka....."
 
Dhing!
Kalimat beliau seperti mengetuk batok kepala saya.
"Maksudnya?" Saya membutuhkan penjelasan supaya mengerti apa yang terjadi.
 
"Mereka menginginkan agar kamu berbicara tidak terlalu direct," jawab beliau.
Memang. Saya termasuk orang yang bicara to the point. Langsung apa adanya. Dan selama ini, saya mengira begitulah cara paling efektif dalam berkomunikasi dengan team kerja saya. Buktinya, mereka bisa menyelesaikan semua penugasan dengan baik.
 
Hari itu, saya menyadari bahwa ternyata, proses komunikasi antara atasan dengan bawahan itu bukanlah semata-mata ditandai dengan sampainya instruksi. Dan hubungan antara bawahan dan atasan bukan sekedar terselesaikannya pekerjaan mereka dengan standar yang tinggi. Lebih dari itu, anak buah kita membutuhkan sesuatu yang tidak selalu bisa diukur dengan angka-angka.
 
Hari itu, saya bersyukur sekali. Karena diberi kesempatan untuk memahami apa yang diharapkan oleh orang-orang yang saya pimpin selain dari sekedar angka-angka. Bayangkan sendainya mereka diam saja, atau sekedar menggunjingkan saya di warung kopi. Saya tidak akan pernah tahu harapan tersembunyi itu. Dan saya tentu akan kehilangan kesempatan untuk melakukan perbaikan yang diperlukan.  Tanpa pengaduan itu, saya tidak mungkin bisa belajar meningkatkan diri agar bisa menjadi pemimpin yang lebih baik dari sebelumnya.
 
Anda, pernahkah mendapatkan masukan yang tulus dari anak buah Anda sehingga punya kesempatan untuk melakukan perbaikan dalam cara Anda memimpin mereka? Jika ya, maka bersyukurlah. Karena Anda mempunyai anak buah yang bersedia menunjukkan jalan yang perlu Anda tempuh, untuk menjadi pemimpin yang lebih baik dikemudian hari.
